Also known as "sinusitis," a sinus infection occurs when the nasal cavities become swollen and inflamed, leading to an infection, which can become chronic.

Luckily, you do not have to suffer from the lingering headaches that are associated with sinusitis.

Dr. Monty Trimble of Dallas Breathe Free Sinus & Allergy Centers said if you can relieve the muscle tension, headaches that are caused by dysfunctional sinuses will improve or go away.

“There's a lot of stress in life today and people are constantly on devices and computers, and for whatever reason, that definitely seems to increase the muscle tension stress,” he said. "The whole purpose of your six to eight hours of sleep is for that muscle tension to go away. And that way, when you wake up in the morning, you're hopefully normal again, ready to face a day. But if you're spending the night fighting that bear, you're snoring, you're obstructing, you're not breathing easily through your nose, you're not going to recover, and then those muscle tension issues compound and your head just feels like it's going to explode.”

Trimble added that sinus congestion makes a headache worse. “If you can improve the sinuses, the nasal airway, patients ultimately find that their headaches almost always improve.”

Sinuses are air-filled spaces inside your forehead, cheekbones and behind the bridge of your nose, which get inflamed due to an allergic reaction, and that the pressure in your sinuses causes the headache.

“We offer allergy treatment, allergy testing for people who do have significant allergic rhinitis. You can permanently alter someone's immune system over time with immunotherapy, with allergy shots or drops, and that can provide permanent improvements for patients,” Trimble said. “Also, when you intervene in their nose with balloon sinuplasty or some terminal reduction, you can also offer permanent changes to the way those sinuses drain and the way the patient breathes. I think that's exciting, to be able to offer this level of treatment with decreased recovery time, in an office setting, which just makes it more convenient for the patient.”

The objective is to alleviate your symptoms once you get an infection. You can use antibiotics, as well as antihistamines or decongestants for a short time. It is best to consult your doctor if the symptoms become recurrent or chronic.
